Mind you, I'm going to strip the one that came with mine to see how different it actually is. The brand new, Mark Mercer-built spare, which we did strip, had steel crank and rods, racing pistons, thin flywheel and small clutch, not to mention the gigantic inlet/exhaust ports and the too-short valve stems. Then there was the carb internals....! So that's how they get 152 bhp! As for under-gazumping, let's talk about it. I'm not desperate to sell mine, but you probably have hundreds lying around from your "cornering the market in Historic Tigas/Royales/anything that's not nailed down" Enough for now. I have a car to get ready for Silverstone. See you all there! Rollo |

After a very long day the 'T 492 Bitza' is finally at it's new home.
Thanks to Mike for being so patient today, the cover lasted 4 miles Mike so it got 'more rope' and we cruised home. I sat in it for the first time 10 mins ago, and it sure does fit me well! As to power trains? Definitly a Pinto, Mike has a cracker on offer to me, and will need Hewland Mk9 with Mk5 gears if I can. This all MUST come later as another shed is quickly needed and so is the sale of my hot hillclimb Impreza, and so is the dosh for our annual Italian holiday very soon. Hard to believe I'm off into the distance with this car, but really looking forward to having a real race car for the hills. Batteries flat on the camera today, pics tomorrow. Graham.

After emails from One Who Knows and some carefull searching in the USA, it does look like this car is a very early 78 (77?) T 490.
It has the holes for the front mount rad and the different to the T 492 front roll hoop. You could buy a conversion kit off Lola apparently to put rads into the side pods, and most 490's were so converted. Only one 490 is thought to be running in front rad form in the USA. Any comments from anyone? I'm a bit surprised there have been zero comments about the car on here with all these pics. despite so many viewings! Graham. |

Probably because the viewers are all S2000 circuit racers!
If you were thinking about restoring/racing the car in the SRCC series i would imagine that you would be swamped with replies. I had a 492 as my first racer in 1981 - with hindsight i should have kept it. Davina drove a front-rad model in '77, i think. Colin's excellent magazines will assist you with your quest for pictures/info on 492's. Glenn |

Thanks Glenn.
Does that mean i'm The Outcast then? No troubles, time to get on with the car as I intend. Regards to all and thank you for the help so far. Graham. |

No, Rollo's the 'outcast'.

No! We are Freelancers!
Pity the rails are so close on the chassis as a Buick V8 would do a treat but even I can't stand the thought of cutting the rear frame off.

The Buick above is in a delightful Brabham, built in the factory, and one of 3 made I think, and one of them is 4 wheel drive.
Great sound, but not particularly fast. It is a bit funny being the owner of a T 490, brand new roll cages, brand new body, and alegedly Formula 2 March suspension in the rear and maybe Lola T 492 front, but custom front uprights with 6 pot Brembo brakes. No chassis plate and the tub looks barely touched and has lots of non standard parts fabricated on it. It is miles away from an original T 492, and even with substantial work it would fall outside the Sports 2000 Rules I expect and rightly so. I really wanted the 'Barn Find' sold on Piston Heads for £8K, road spec in places but all there, what a find! I hope that makes it back on your tracks. If I had won that one then it would have been fully restored I assure you. I think it is lucky this car got this far without being butchered to death. When it is being done I hope you all won't lead me to the gallows.
Not exactly a T 492.

Picked-up the 'spare' body for the T492 over the weekend, and photo'd the engine for the car just to proove The Butcher is generally going along
the purist route:
Friends at the hillclimb today think a good Rover V8 should go in there! |

I have managed to track the histoy of this t 492 back to 1985.
In 85/86 the tub was re-bodied with a pink coloured Karmann Ghia fibre glass body and a BDG 2 litre fitted with FT 200 box. The car was built for an Alan Humberstone at that time and never raced. Question: Does anyone on here recal a sale of a T 492 to Alan please? All I'm trying to find is the chassis number. Graham. |

Derek Daly drove a 490/492 fitted with a BDG in the 2 liter series. Not successfully, though. There is a picture of the car in one of the Lola books. Could
this have any connection?

Thanks for the reply.
The only facts I have of this 'bitza' Lola T490/492 is: Back to very early 80's a man called alan Humberstone had the car with a Skoda body originally (ex-Wendy Wools Super Saloons) and the Lola was re-fitted with a pink Karmann Ghia body, central black stripe and huge (silly size) rear wing. It possibly had a Hart or a 1300 turbo 4 pot in the back. The car probably raced once or not at all. I have no info on the car before all this! It looks like some light crash damage was repaired to the drivers side at some time before the super Saloon period. |

Bit of progress on the T 490, but so much still to do.
