Posts: 107 (03/23/09 12:53:40) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Had a surprise phone call from one of this Lola's previous owners, Alan Humberstone, who had heard of the car by chance. He set the record staight and this clears one or two of the fuzzy areas which i could not resolve, but it is dissapointing news. However: someone on here might be able to help? The history up to Tony Dickinson selling the car to Harry Humberstone is correct. Alan had a tough time sorting the front suspension and made several changes inc even air jacks (holes still in the tub). It was raced at Brands Hatch with the Karman Ghia body and then written off at Lydden Hill where the tub T490 HU6 was trashed. The car was rebuilt using another T 492 S2000 racer in S2000 trim, chassis number unkown. This was in about 1988. Does this ring any bells?? The car was eventually sold to Autoquip in 2001. Any info gratefully recieved. I have notified Lola Heritage of HU6 T 490's fate and relinquishing my claim to HU6. Sad but true. Last Edited By: 911hillclimber 03/23/09 12:58:53. Edited 1 times.

Actually finished the wiring, only need one -20 oil sump hose and a can of fresh Optimax and ready to press the button... To the rest of the car, just the seat (on order from TW Mouldings), seat belts, the rear brake lines and refurb the mag alloy wheels which I prey are not cracked. I'm sure there is another 20 things to do before the suspension set-up. Planning the first run at Loton in mid July. (09)

Still a lot to do, but the light is getting brighter now! Most of you know what a significant point this is. Just 6 weeks to go to the first hillclimb/shake-down.

Set all the suspension up using finshing line and a camber guage, not too hard and very satisfying to do. Really pleased as it actually looks straight too. See how it drives... Used the Lola factory settings as a starter, but I'm sure there are better ones for hillclimbs. Looks like this tonight:

It's been a long hard 9 months of toil, and there has been times when a Pinto with a Hewland was a very attactive solution! The car is now away for carb tuning and some bits on the engine by a very trusted specialist while I'm away for 2 weeks in Italy. Then flat out to get it to Curborough for a private day to see if it breaks and I can drive it at all... If all's ok I've entered the car at Loton B meets in mid July If it breaks then I will forget it for 2009 and fix it for 2010 start. My original plan was for 2010 start, but I'm too impatient! I will also see if you and Gerry can come down to Log Book it for me too! I STILL have a 1/2 page long list to do. Graham

Took 16 hours to do but so much better. The car has now come to the stage where it is ready to test on a private day next week ahead of the first hillclimb events at Loton Park. When I first started in '92 you only needed a crash hat. The Curb day was a sudden arrangement and changed several time due to my work 'meetings' so sorry to miss you out. Managed to tweek the gearbox selectors again and even got 3rd several time Fantastic accelleration when in 2nd and 3rd, bit twitchy under cornering but dampers and roll bars all 'approximate'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCROpzPOQ6Y Next race is same venue in 3 weeks time so time to sort some more issues out. I guess now is the time to say goodbye. The Lola T492 is onto it's next colourfull chapter and I think it's 5 th engine (lost count), and I know some of you have resented what I've done to this already well modified car, and some exactly the opposite! Info from another web site in response to me trying to find the chassis number of the T492 used to reapir this car in the mid 80's leads me back. It has been suggested that Mike Turner or Chris Snowden on here might know who sold their T 492 to Alan Humberstone as the repair car to the original T490 HU6. Also, a car like this was offered for sale by a Brian Davies who lived in the south of England in the 80's. Any of this ring a bell? Brief remeinder of the car's history: Originally T 490 HU6 bought by Toleman from the factory in 1977 Raced by a few and sold to Tony Dickinson as a base for a Skoda bodied Thunder Saloon about 1981(Wendy Wools Championship) Sold to Harry Humberstone about 1984/5 and fitted with a Kharmann Ghia body (pink with heavy black stripe), # 2 body off Dr Enderby's moulds. Crashed badly by Harry's son Alan at Lydden Hill. Prob about 1987 Car re-tubbed (the car I'm trying to trace). Alan tells me the donar car was complete S2000, and the previous suspension off the crashed car was transfered to it. Presumably these parts were sold on into the S2000 arena. The tub was modified by Haggispeed (Tony Harman) for Thunder Saloons The car went on to another then to Jaspie on here from whom I purchased it.

The question has been did Brian have the replacement tub/car in 'stock' when his friend Harry needed one to repair the Dickinson based car crashed by Alan? Here is the proposed firing order: Starting with the end of the fact trail: Dickinson sells the Skoda Lola to Harry for Alan to race. So: Harry has the car and adds the Ghia body or does it have Dickinson Skoda body? I think Harry gets a body-less Lola and drops the Ghia onto it. Alan races it a few times, the last ending in a crash at Lydden. (Alan told me it was a Big Crash and the tub was a write-off, driver's side) Harry /Alan decide to re-tub the wreck. According to Alan, a car was used, not a spare tub. Did the spare car come from Brian Davies (Owner of Autoquip) who knew Harry AND is thought to have one for sale then? (mid 1980's) Harry gets Harman/Schieder to build the car up with mods to the tub/side pods to match the body etc. All those mods are confirmed by Harman (Haggispeed) as he has seen the pics. Harman does not recall the source of the donar, neither does Alan, let alone the Chassis number. What I know is the tub I have has been damaged before (drivers side rear bulkhead) but not from a crash, but from a mod made to the tub at some time to open-up part of the side pod with a cover (non easy access) on the top of the pod, bit like a battery box. This repair is a bit pop-rivit, but neatly done. The re-built tub now has the remnents of the Ghia body in pink/black wing, and never races again. Harman said to me he thinks the car never raced again after the work. Harry is now dead I think, and alan has gone to spain. The car in this engine-less state goes (back?) to Brian who stores it, but I know worked on it too adding the brakes (huge Brembos, Dickinson had AP's) and a Sierra Cossie engine/ Hewland FT 200. In 2001 Mike Inges buys the car from Brian in this state to sprint/hillclimb. Mike does a fair bit to it but scraps the body (beyond recovery according to Mike) replacing it with a new Lola T 492 body from TW Mouldings. Accordingly, the Ghia rollcage goes, and a Lola design is copied and fitted. The tub I have has no evidence of a chassis plate ever bing fitted, none. I have almost endlessly looked at Lola T 492 'real' tubs and compared it to mine and all the panels/rivits etc are the same. The steel rear frame is the same too. I believe the tub I have is of Lola origin not DIY rebuilt (unless they are really good at it) The tub has a lot of extra holes for Air Jacks, pipes and tubes including 2 at the front for radiator pipes as if the car had a front mounted rad (I guess the Ghia was this way). These holes are as the early T 490 of 1977, the first 10 off of the design from Lola. Just maybe the donar car is a T 490? So there! these are the facts/fiction as I understand them. Any offers on this!? Graham In 2008 Mike offers the car to me from an approach on the S 2000 web site.
