I recall a year or two ago Martin Ellis lauding the value of a HANS device after he made a hurried acquaintance with an Oulton Park tyre barrier. Sadly I am
in a similar position but still wanted to echo Martin's sentiments. My impact was well in excess of 100mph - the result of complete brake loss on entry to
the hairpin - and after the initial impact the car took to the air to test out the outer lorry tyre wall too. I was a touch groggy that evening but was
fearful of how my neck and back would be the following day. In fact I was fine.
The circuit medical staff were hugely enthusiastic about HANS and as a real beneficiary I feel compelled to encourage fellow SRCC racers in their use. When you
first wear one it feels very ungainly and the thing is a touch awkward around the paddock but it is soon forgotten on the track, where it counts. They still
appear pricey but frankly are cheap in the aftermath of a big one.
